Sangue Di Giuda - Blood of Judas

Posted on 18 October 2014

Looking for a good wine to celebrate Halloween? Check out Sangue di Guida, an unusual red wine made in the Oltrepo Pavese region of Italy. Sangue di Guida means Blood of Judas. Yup, you read that correctly. Blood of Judas. But don't let the name deter you from trying this wine. I have heard two different stories about the origin of the name. The first is that friars didn't approve of the "stimulating and aphrodisiac effect" of the wine. The second version is that Judas returned to the city of Oltrepo after betraying Jesus to find redemption. He was recognized by the residents of Oltrepo and an attempt was made to kill him. He escaped only by solving the problems of the vineyards with a miracle. Sangue di Giuda is a naturally sparkling sweet red wine and is produced from a combination of Barbera and Croatina and rare grapes Ughetta and Rara Uva. This wine contains hints of dark plum, black cherries, and crushed berries. Pair this wine with pasta, cheese, white meats and even desserts.
